Food, water and shelter are the foundation of any long-term survival plan. If you are prepared and have stored survival foods, and water for yourself and loved ones, you’re farther ahead than the vast majority of the people.

You possibly could survive a few weeks or even a month without food, but you should not have to. Without food, you will become weak, susceptible to illnesses, dizzy and unable to perform survival-related tasks. Yes, water is more critical to short-term survival, but it’s much easier for even the unskilled survivalist to find water in the wild than it is to find food.  Water safety and purity is an important matter as well.

Will three days of survival food be enough, as many suggest? Or do you need a year’s worth? We can’t tell you what’s best in your situation, but 2 weeks or more is the minimum for anyone in any potential survival situation. Do you need 1 to 3 months? You very well may need that much.

To start you off lets just consider a 3 day supply, and the very minimum at that.

Select survival foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking and little or no water.  Pack a manual can opener and eating utensils. Avoid salty foods, as they will make you thirsty, and choose foods your family will eat.

Here is a list of the types of food you should store for a 3 day emergency:

* Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables
* Protein or fruit bars
* Dry cereal or granola
* Peanut butter
* Dried fruit
* Nuts
* Crackers
* Canned juices
* Non-perishable pasteurized milk
* High energy foods
* Vitamins
* Food for infants
* Comfort/stress foods

As far as water is concerned you should store at least a 3 day supply.

* One gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation.
* Children, nursing mothers, and sick people may need more water.
* If you live in a warm weather climate more water may be necessary.
* Store water tightly in clean plastic containers such as soft drink bottles.
* Keep at least a three-day supply of water per person.

This is just a very brief summary of what you will need for survival foods and water. There are many online stores that you can find and buy survival foods kits from short term to very long term time frames.  This is an issue that should not be taken lightly as emergency and disasters will occur, it is a certainty.
